Adolphe Millot (1857–1921) was the French illustrator who drew the natural-history plates in the “Nouveau Larousse illustré”. Each plate is a tightly arranged tableau of specimens with French captions; here they cover flowers, birds, butterflies, fruit, molluscs, eggs, fish, insects, arthropods and the ocean.

Clear allThe “Nouveau Larousse illustré” was an illustrated encyclopaedic dictionary, published by Larousse in Paris around 1900, and each of its colour plates gathered one area of nature on a single page. Millot managed it by setting specimens edge to edge, each drawn clearly enough to be identified and each named in French, so that a sheet reads like a chart.
The plates here follow the broad divisions of the natural world. Animals take up most of them: “Oiseaux”, “Papillons”, “Insectes”, “Arthropodes”, “Poissons” and “Mollusques”. “Fleurs” and “Fruits” stand for the plant kingdom, “Oeufs” lines up eggs side by side, and “Océan” and “Océanographie” turn to the sea. Each plate is reproduced in pigment inks as a giclée print, made to order in Berlin in sizes A4 to A0, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas.
