Clear allIn 1892 an exhibition of Munch’s paintings in Berlin caused such controversy that it closed within a week; he went on to live in the city for several years. There he began to group his main pictures as the “Frieze of Life”, a cycle about love, anxiety and death that includes “The Scream” and “Madonna”.
“Despair” (1892) came first: a figure at a railing above the fjord, under a red sky. “The Scream” returns to the same railing, with a figure facing the viewer, hands to its head. “Madonna” shows a woman with closed eyes and loose dark hair. The three are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
