Egon Schiele

Egon Schiele (1890–1918) was an Austrian Expressionist working in Vienna, known for figure drawings with a nervous, angular line. The works here include nudes, two women embracing, a dancer, a young mother, a portrait of a child, self-portraits and a portrait of Wally Neuzil.

About Egon Schiele

Schiele studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and was encouraged by Gustav Klimt, but his line soon left Klimt’s ornament behind: sharp contours, twisted poses, bare paper around the figure. Most of his figure work is drawing and watercolour rather than oil painting. He died in the influenza epidemic of 1918, aged 28.

The nudes form the largest group, from “Nude in Black Stockings” and the crouching back view to the standing nudes with a patterned robe and with orange drapery, and “Mädchenakt (Gertrude)”, a study of his younger sister. One portrait shows Wally Neuzil, his model and companion for several years; beside the self-portraits are two townscapes, “Mödling II” and “Stadtansicht”. Drawings and paintings are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
