Together with Wassily Kandinsky, Marc edited the almanac “Der Blaue Reiter”, published in Munich in 1912, the year of this painting. He gave colours fixed meanings: blue stood for the masculine and spiritual, yellow for the feminine and gentle, red for heavy matter. He was killed at Verdun in 1916, at the age of 36.
In “In the Rain”, diagonal strokes of rain cut across the whole picture, and figures and a dog can be made out among the broken planes of colour. The painting is made to order in Berlin as a giclée print with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
