In 1897 Klimt became the first president of the Vienna Secession. His use of gold leaf grew after he saw the Byzantine mosaics of Ravenna in 1903.
Several works here began as large decorative projects. The “Beethoven Frieze” was painted for the Secession’s Beethoven exhibition of 1902. “The Tree of Life” and “Fulfilment” belong to the Stoclet Frieze, designed for the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. “Hygieia”, the goddess of health, comes from “Medicine”, one of his paintings for the University of Vienna that were destroyed in 1945. “Beech Grove” is one of his square landscapes, most of which he painted in summer at the Attersee. Klimt’s friezes, figures and landscapes are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
