Jean Bernard

Jean Bernard was a Dutch draughtsman of the late 18th and early 19th century, known for precise, intimate studies of animals and plants. Most of the drawings here are heads: cats, a dog, a donkey, a hare, a duck and a bear. There are also a sleeping cat, a sitting cat, a kitten and an artichoke.

About Jean Bernard

A study, in this sense, is a drawing made to look closely at one thing rather than to tell a story or build a scene. Bernard’s subjects are everyday ones, mostly domestic and farm animals. Sleeping animals suit this kind of drawing, since they hold still long enough to be observed.

Cats are the largest group: a sleeping cat, a sleeping kitten, a sitting cat and two head studies, one of them of a calico. The other heads show a donkey, a dog and a duck, and two wild animals, a hare and a bear. The artichoke is the only plant. Bernard’s studies are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
