About Julie de Graag

In a woodcut, every part that should stay blank is cut away from the block, and only the raised surface takes the ink. De Graag worked with that constraint rather than against it: her prints get by with few lines, large flat areas and plain grounds.

The year runs through the collection. “Paddenstoelen”, Dutch for mushrooms, is dated September 1917; “October”, the chestnuts and the winter landscape with its farmstead lead on into the cold months. Her animals appear alone or in pairs: a duck and two ducks together, a parrot, a cat (“Kat”) and a dog’s head. The shell stands on its own. Her woodcuts and drawings are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
