NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory published these retro-futuristic travel posters in its “Visions of the Future” and Exoplanet Travel Bureau series. Destinations range from Earth as an oasis in space to Venus, Jupiter, Titan, Enceladus, Europa, Ceres and the historic sites of Mars, and on to exoplanets such as Kepler-186f, TRAPPIST-1e and the lava world 55 Cancri e.

About NASA

The posters were designed at JPL in the manner of mid-century travel advertising, with flat colour, simplified shapes and a slogan, as if each world were a holiday destination. The joke rests on real science: most scenes start from something a mission or telescope has found.

Kepler-16b orbits two suns, and its poster shows a figure beneath both; PSO J318.5-22 drifts without a star, in endless night. On the super-Earth HD 40307g, a skydiver drops towards the surface. Within the solar system, rowers cross the methane seas of Titan, an observatory floats above the clouds of Venus, balloons hang beneath Jupiter’s auroras and geysers rise from Enceladus. “The Grand Tour” recalls the planetary alignment the Voyager probes used. All fifteen posters are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, from A4 to A0.
