Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon (1840–1916) was a French Symbolist whose late pastels and oils of flower bouquets and butterflies glow with dreamlike colour. Bouquets in blue and dark vases, “Flower Clouds”, “Nasturtiums” and “Butterflies” sit beside “Ophelia”, “Saint George and the Dragon” and a village in Brittany.

About Odilon Redon

For the first half of his career Redon worked almost only in black: charcoal drawings and lithographs he called his noirs, peopled with floating eyes and hybrid creatures. Colour took over in the 1890s, in pastel and oil, and in his last years flowers became a main subject, not as botanical studies but as bouquets set against soft, open grounds of colour.

Several of those bouquets are here, in a blue vase, in a dark round vase and with butterflies hovering around them. In “Flower Clouds” a small sailing boat drifts beneath coloured skies, and Ophelia appears among blossoms. Saint George rides a white horse beside a stormy sea. Each work is reproduced as a giclée print with pigment inks, made to order in Berlin on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
