Paul Gauguin

Paul Gauguin (1848–1903) was a French Post-Impressionist who worked in strong, flat colour. The works run from a landscape near Le Pouldu in Brittany and a riverbank in early spring to the Rue Jouvenet in Rouen, a Tahitian landscape and “Te Raau Rahi”, with a vase of flowers and a cat and “Soyez amoureuses vous serez heureuses”.

About Paul Gauguin

Gauguin came to painting late: a stockbroker who showed with the Impressionists, he turned to art full-time only in the 1880s. At Pont-Aven and Le Pouldu in Brittany he and the painters around him gave up Impressionist brushwork for flat colour held by firm contours, a manner he took to Tahiti in 1891.

“Rue Jouvenet, Rouen”, from the mid-1880s, still uses short Impressionist strokes. The landscape near Le Pouldu stands for the Breton years. “Te Raau Rahi”, the big tree, and the Tahitian landscape belong to the South Seas, while “Soyez amoureuses vous serez heureuses”, a subject he had first carved as a wooden relief, appears as a black-and-white woodcut. Every work is made to order in Berlin as a giclée print with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas in sizes A4 to A0.
