Try removing one — the counts beside each option say how many prints it would leave.
Clear all“The Temple of Flora” was the third part of Thornton’s larger work on the Linnaean system of plant classification. He commissioned painters such as Philip Reinagle and Peter Henderson to set each flower in a fitting landscape, and the plates were engraved in aquatint, mezzotint and stipple, printed in colour and finished by hand. The cost nearly ruined him; in 1811 he ran a lottery with the original paintings among the prizes.
The settings matter as much as the flowers. “The Queen Plant” shows the bird-of-paradise flower, named after Queen Charlotte; songbirds and a nest accompany “The Roses”; the superb lily and the China limodorum, an orchid, rise against dark, misty landscapes. Each plate is made to order in Berlin as a giclée print with pigment inks, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, A4 to A0.
