About this print

The natural-history plate documents a dicotyledon plant with anatomical precision. D’Orbigny published the original hand-coloured engraving of the purple blooms in Paris between 1841 and 1849 for his “Dictionnaire universel d'histoire naturelle”. The scientific illustration pairs the bell-shaped flowers with structural views of their inner anatomy.
