About this print

A subtle mountain backdrop appears behind the weathered wooden branch. Charles d'Orbigny published the plate in Paris between 1841 and 1849 for his French natural-history encyclopaedia, “Dictionnaire universel d'histoire naturelle”. The engraving captures the layering of the feathers and the animal's sharp gaze with scientific precision.
