Clear allFour of the landscapes belong to “Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji”, the series that also includes “The Great Wave off Kanagawa”: Mishima Pass, the Tama River, Umezawa and Gotenyama Hill at Shinagawa. The Kirifuri Waterfall and the Yoshitsune Falls come from a set on the waterfalls of the provinces. Hokusai made both series when he was around seventy.
The two poets are linked by the “Hyakunin Isshu”: Fujiwara no Sadaie compiled this anthology of a hundred poems by a hundred poets, Sarumaru Dayū is one of them, and Hokusai illustrated the collection in a late series. Flowers and birds complete the selection: lilies, the blackberry lily, peonies with a canary and gulls on a geometric ground. Hokusai’s works are made to order in Berlin as giclée prints with pigment inks, in sizes A4 to A0, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas.
