Mark Catesby

Mark Catesby (1683–1749) was the English naturalist whose “Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands” was the first illustrated account of North American flora and fauna. These plates show the laurel tree of Carolina, crimson honeysuckle, a yellow trumpet flower, a climbing vine and the purple finch.

About Mark Catesby

Catesby spent several years in the American colonies, in Virginia and later in Carolina and the Bahamas, drawing plants and animals from life. Back in London he learned to etch, made most of the plates himself and issued the book in instalments, often placing a bird and a plant together on one plate.

“The Laurel Tree of Carolina”, Catesby’s name for the southern magnolia, appears with its large white flower and seed cone, beside a crimson honeysuckle, a yellow trumpet flower and a red-flowered vine; “The Purple Finch” is the one bird. The plates are reproduced as giclée prints with pigment inks, made to order in Berlin on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, A4 to A0.
