About this print
Mark Catesby included the botanical plate in his “Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands”, the first illustrated account of North American flora and fauna. Red seeds emerge from the cone, contrasting with the dark background. The copperplate etching uses linework and tonal gradation to define the plant's structure.
