About Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita

Mesquita worked in Amsterdam and taught at a school of architecture and decorative arts in Haarlem, where M. C. Escher studied under him. His woodcuts build forms from firm parallel lines, white against black, and reduce animals and faces to clear, almost geometric shapes. In 1944 he was deported with his family; he and his wife were murdered at Auschwitz.

Birds make up the largest group: a lame marabou, a crow, a heron framed by architecture, an eagle owl and the owl titled “Ringuil”. “Sneeuwhaas” shows two snow hares between tree trunks. The figures range from a mother and child and a portrait with round spectacles to masked figures in patterned hoods. The woodcuts and drawings are reproduced as giclée prints with pigment inks, made to order in Berlin on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, A4 to A0.
