About this print

Renard published the original engraving in Amsterdam in 1719 for one of the earliest colour books on aquatic life. The plate arranges six distinctly patterned species, including a large tan fish and a rounded blue specimen. Hand-coloured geometric motifs highlight the scales and fins of these partly fantastical creatures from the East Indies.
