About this print

The composition arranges the East Indies specimens as partly fantastical creatures for “Poissons, écrevisses et crabes”, a 1719 Amsterdam publication and one of the earliest colour books on fish. Renard combined scientific curiosity with artistic imagination to define the diverse patterns on the animals. Each specimen displays highly individualised markings that depart from strict natural history.
