About this print
Patterns of stripes, spots and lattice scales mark the four tropical specimens in this plate from “Poissons, écrevisses et crabes”. Louis Renard included these East Indies animals in his 1719 Amsterdam publication, one of the first colour books on fish. The engraving incorporates partly fantastical elements into the anatomy of the sea creatures.
