Clear allKyoto’s textile, lacquer and ceramics workshops needed a steady supply of new patterns, and design magazines such as “Shin Bijutsukai” provided them. Its designs came from Kamisaka Sekka and artists around him, drawing on the Rinpa tradition of flat colour, bold silhouettes and motifs cropped by the edge of the sheet.
The plates move between nature and ornament. Snow lies on pine branches as birds fly past against pink; maple leaves drift on swirling water; plum blossoms lie on a blue field of cracked ice, an old pattern. Gulls rest on geometric ground, green hills and rivers are laid out in stripes, pine-covered islands sit among stylised waves, and a teapot curls its dragon spout among clouds. These designs are reproduced as giclée prints with pigment inks, made to order in Berlin on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, in sizes A4 to A0.
