About Raphael of Flowers – Les Liliacées

Redouté came from a family of painters in the Ardennes and made his career in Paris among its botanists. “Les Liliacées” ran to eight volumes and nearly five hundred plates, printed by stipple engraving in colour and finished by hand, so the shading is built from fine dots. Lilies lose their shape when pressed and dried, which made exact paintings of living plants valuable to botany.

The family is taken broadly, as it was around 1800. Beside true lilies such as the Madonna and tiger lilies stand plants since placed in other families: the pineapple and Bromelia pinguin, yucca and dracaena, a crinum, a spider lily, the pineapple lily Eucomis and the banana in fruit. Redouté’s plates are reproduced as giclée prints with pigment inks and made to order in Berlin, on matte 210 g/m² fine art paper or 400 g/m² cotton canvas, A4 to A0.
